Visual Arts
Welcome to Art at Birch!
Every child is an artist and there is an artform for every child. Our program focuses on a wide range of subjects, artists, and media. Students experiment with various techniques and artistic styles, making personally meaningful works of heart. Art classes at Birch are engaging, developmentally and grade level appropriate; and are aligned with the Visual Arts Standards and Grade Level Expectations.
Each grade level creates a diverse body of work that culminates in an artist portfolio that students take home at the end of the year. Artwork is regularly displayed around the hallways at school, in school-wide Art Showcases, and district art shows.
Birch also boasts an after school art club that rotates based on student interest.
Art Shows
There are many opportunities for students to show off their artwork throughout the school year!
- Hallway Displays are updated regularly so be sure to check out the hallways.
- The Boulder Valley School District K-8 Art Show is held in the Spring at the Lafayette Public Library. Students from each grade are selected to represent Birch.
- The Ed Center Art Show features the work of a few outstanding students who have the prestigious honor of having their artwork displayed for a full year at the District Headquarters where the School Board meets regularly. There is a reception for this art show in the Spring.
- BIRCH SHOWCASES happen throughout the year and show off all the hard work we do in specials. This is a special event where you come to Birch to see what your child has been doing in art, music, and P.E.. Check the the grade level Specials Showcase schedule on the right!
Art Portfolios
Art Portfolios are sent home once a year during the month of May. After projects have been on display, I collect the work and store them inside a portfolio each child has personalized at the beginning of the year. At the end of the year, you can sit down with your child and look at all of the art they have created and share in meaningful dialogue together.
Art Attire
Although we try very hard to keep clean in the art room, our creativity sometimes get the best of us and we end up with a mess. Please dress for art in darker, more casual clothes and please remember that most everything we use is washable and non-toxic so with a little elbow grease and some pre-treatment, laundering should go smoothly.
Original Works (art fundraiser)
Birch Elementary participates in Original Works each year! This is a wonderful fundraising opportunity that supports visual art at Birch. Original Works is a company that reproduces your child’s artwork on professionally made products like magnets, mugs and mouse pads. We create an artwork for this as our first major project in art. Once the art is complete you will receive an image of your child's art on an order form in their Friday Folder. Look for this order form in late September. Visit https://www.
